Choosing from more than 800 inspiring entries, HANDY editors handpicked six Top Tool Testers to participate in the 2010 National Hardware Show’s HANDY Test Shop in Las Vegas, Nevada. These representative DIYers will get hands-on experience with the latest tools and then post real-time product reviews right from the show floor. Watch for their reports in May!

And the winners are…

Charles Pherson of Brighton, Michigan, is a retired state trooper who recently started a small handyman business. He has extensive plumbing, electrical and woodworking experience, but we were most impressed by the deck Charles built in his backyard.

Kenneth Fox of Tacoma, Washington, first realized his talent for woodworking in high school shop class. He now crafts fine furniture for friends and family and donates several pieces a year to his son’s school fundraiser.

Jeff Carter of San Diego, California, is a dedicated DIYer who enjoys woodworking and light remodeling. He operates a part-time woodworking business out of his one-car garage, where he builds small projects for local businesses and his family members.

Mark Schmitt of Mequon, Wisconsin, is a second-time homeowner and an avid remodeler, who learned much of his DIY know-how from his father, a plumbing contractor. Mark enjoys woodworking and projects that involve plumbing, electrical and mechanical work.

Mike Turner of Tucson, Arizona, uses his two welders with acetylene setup as well as his plasma cutter to craft various metalworking projects. He also has a talent for tile work and owns a kiln.

Vern Grassel of Otsego, Minnesota, turned his passion for projects into a career. He started out as a cabinetmaker, then expanded his knowledge and skills to include various forms of carpentry and fine woodworking.
