Simple Water Fountains
Create a custom water feature that’s perfect for your space.
POSTED BY: Dan Cary
May 03, 2011
You don’t have to have a large space, a big budget or even big muscles to build a water feature into your landscape. Although large ponds and waterfalls are beautiful, you can achieve much of the same ambience (with much less work) by creating a small fountain.
Fountains are easier to build and maintain and much less expensive than large water features. And you can install them in locations where it would be nearly impossible to create a large pond, such as in a small garden or on a deck or balcony. Designing your own fountain is probably easier than you think.
There are only three functional components: a spout, a reservoir and a pump. The pump is hidden, so the flow rate is the main variable you’ll need to consider when you choose one (see “Pump Basics,” below). On the other hand, the spout, the reservoir and any decorative materials you add provide ample opportunity to exercise your creativity.
Click here to download a pdf of these water-fountain plans, complete with building instructions, photos, drawings and a cutting list for three small fountains.

I love all of these plans! I just wish there was an estimate of what each would cost.
Not just the fountains estimates, but any of the plans that HT posts.

Look at reed481's post up top. Go to "Handy Magazine" tab, "Past Issues", June-July 2010 then click on Planter Fountain. That's where the detailed plans are. Thanks reed.

Great Project but I came across 2 problems. Cutting List: K 6 Wide planter-siding pieces needed to be double. 6 per side of the fountain for a total of 12. Also, I could not find where I live a '2'x3'utility tub' that the plans called for. They were either too big or too small. I had to build one and line it with a pvc pond liner.

Are there detailed instructions available for the cedar planter fountain that include step by step cutting and assembly? The only thing I find is 5 page article title Simple Water Fountains by Dan Cary. Aside from the size of the utility tub and spout tile there are no dimensions listed. What size to you cut the cedar pieces and how many etc?

Try downloading Adobe Acrobat reader (free) or updating the one you have installed. If that doesn't work looks at the top of the web page; is there a small yellow band stating popups not allowed? right click and allow from this site.
Hope this helps!

I don't know if it is a type-o, but Key E should be 24" not 22 1/2" in order for it to go in place as per photo 1 of the plan. Has any one else ran inot this problem.

Malopr, Did your adjustment of Key E to 24" solve the issue? I'd like to try this plan. I'm a TOTAL beginnner, so I'm reviewing all the thread comments to make adjustments as you professionals find them.
NPisa, "Great Project but I came across 2 problems. Cutting List: K 6 Wide planter-siding pieces needed to be double. 6 per side of the fountain for a total of 12. Did your adjustments work, too?
Thanks!
