Outdoor Slat Chair – Full Size Template
A full size pattern in a PDF file of the sides of the outdoor slat chair.
POSTED BY: Bruce Kieffer
July 25, 2011
The sides of the outdoor slat chair (Workshop project, HANDY Magazine, August/September 2011) are routed using a pattern bit guided against a 1/4-in.-thick plywood template. We’ve provided a full size template in a PDF file (link below). If you have access to a copy center with a large-format printer, you can download the PDF, send or take it to the copy center and have it printed. The printing instructions appear on the PDF file. It cost me $7 to print the pattern full-size — well worth the minor expense.
To mount the printout on a 1/4-in.-thick x 36-in.-square piece of hardwood plywood, first apply a light coat of spray adhesive to the paper pattern and to the face of the plywood. Let both pieces dry. Cut a 36-in.-square piece of cardboard or poster board. Lay the cardboard on the plywood and the printout on the cardboard. (The dried adhesive won’t stick to the cardboard.) Slowly pull the cardboard out and press the pattern onto the plywood. The two surfaces with the dried adhesive will stick to each other.
Once you’ve transferred the pattern to the plywood, drill a starter hole for the handhold. Using a jigsaw, carefully cut out that opening and the shape of the sides; then sand the sawn edges smooth. Take your time — your chair sides will only be as good as your template.

My wife loves the (as she calls it) BASIC idea. But she wants me to add flat arms coming out from the back on hinges and to build a 3rd (maybe 4th) chair with no back to act as an ottoman. Look what you've started! :)

I just recently joined and don't have a August/Sept. issue. I even tried the archive link and no soap. I would really like to make a set for my mom's condo...But, no slat meas., no cut list...

I made 2 chairs and a bench a lot like these and they hold up very well as well as being a big hit on the deck. They are the first chairs people sit on.

Just joined the Club. I really like those chairs for a future project. The big question asked is what are the size of the slats? I would say from looking at the picture, one by 2 inches wide. And if making a bench to go with them, I would cut out one more piece, besides the sides, and position that in the center for the bench. The slats themselves should be the main structure support, with a piece at the bottom rear. If more needed, then another in the center.

Just joined! Is there an online copy of the Aug/Sept 2011 issue? I looked at the on-line past issues but that effort was totally useless. There is not an on-line past issue viewing page. Would like to build these chairs. I really could figure it out but tested plans always work better and save time and money.
