If you're looking for a useful project that even a kid can help you build, then this tool tote is a great choice. In fact, I tested the design by making a dozen of them with my son's Cub Scout pack.

This versatile, utilitarian design can serve as a kid’s first toolbox, a tote for your favorite gardener or crafter or even a unique magazine rack - making it a perfect gift.

This easy-to-build project only requires a few tools, including a jigsaw, drill/driver, ruler, a couple clamps and a hammer. Material use was a top consideration when I designed this tote. There's a good chance you already have all the materials you need in your scrap bin. You can make two (one to give and one to keep!) from one 8-ft.-long 1x8, leaving almost no waste.
