Stay Connected While You Work

When we work on projects, everything around us takes a beating: our tools, clothes, hands and even our cell phones. Replacing a phone can be painfully expensive, so we always try to keep it out of harm’s way. But to be on the safe side, we’ve found that using a protective case is a good preventive measure. One of the most effective models is the Pelican i1015; it’s a shock- and water-resistant clamshell that fits any iPhone or iPod Touch and many other brands of smart phones.

This case features a headphone jack and inside storage for earbuds, plus a clear front cover for viewing your phone’s screen. Whether you’re working on a hardscaping project, building a deck, doing some gardening or just standing outside in the rain (we won’t ask why), this may be the best way to keep your phone clean and safe.

A HANDY staff favorite (because we’re all music lovers) is the Ryobi Tek4 Audio Plus Noise Suppression Headphones (left). These headphones are comfortable and affordable, and they do an excellent job of suppressing noise. Of course, we particularly like that you can plug in your now suitably protected smartphone or MP3 player and substitute the sound of “progress” for the sounds of music. The Tek4 battery lasts for hours before it needs recharging. (Note that the battery and charger are sold separately.) These water-resistant headphones allow you to hear normal speech, but instantly block loud noise.

To be sure you’re listening to your preferred tunes, check out smartphone apps for streaming music services such as Pandora, iHeartRadio and Spotify. Most services work with WiFi and 3G to keep you wirelessly connected to your work tunes.

Do you have a favorite electronic gadget that makes your projects more fun? Tell us what it is in the comments area below.

I love the Rigid bubble app. Great camera function built into this bubble level app.

I've come across a better water-resistant case from Lifeproof at www.lifeproof.com for my iPhone 4S that is slimmer, so it actually fits in my back pocket comfortably & it stays water-resistant without blocking access to the screen & buttons. This case blocks out dust & dirt, is immersible in water and mud, keeps your iPhone protected & dry without adding bulk to your iPhone. Personally my iPhone has survived not one but two accidental drops from 5' to 8' landing on solid concrete without any damage. perfect for that underwater picture.
