Whether you’re ready or not, we’re going through a new phase of the communications revolution. Tablets will change everything, and I’m not talking about the clay variety. We already have almost universal access to the Internet, which provides a dizzying array of choices: quick access to all kinds of information, interaction with others around the globe, endless shopping options, millions of online videos (including an video version of this column, below) and countless other opportunities for instant gratification. Now we’re in the midst of a transition from traditional print books, magazines and newspapers to iPad and other tablet-based publications.
I’m not sure that print will be displaced by its electronic equivalent to the same extent that digital photography has replaced film, but the trend is certainly gaining momentum, and we haven’t ignored it. If you own an iPad, you’re probably aware that this issue of HANDY coincides with the third iPad edition of HANDY Magazine. (As the popularity of tablets increases – and it certainly will as prices fall – we’ll produce the magazine in other tablet formats as well.) If you don’t own a tablet, you should seek an opportunity to try one. You’ll find that it weighs only slightly more than a magazine, is easy to read and use and can hold hundreds, if not thousands, of magazines and books -- that will lighten your load. Most tablets’ versatility and usefulness can’t be overstated.
HANDY’s iPad edition opens up a universe of interactive possibilities that the printed magazine can’t match, and we’re constantly adding new features to increase its appeal. Starting with incredibly simple gesture-based navigation, you’ll find links that take you directly to expanded content, step-by-step slideshows and videos that allow you to explore topics in much greater detail. If a project requires particular parts or hardware, the links under SOURCES ONLINE will often send you directly to specific product pages in case you wish to purchase items. And we’re continuing to develop new ideas that will make the tablet magazine a richer, more informative experience, which also provides a greater value for your membership dollars.
Tablets have come a long way since the original clay variety, which we now view as a quaint anachronism. It’s possible that in the future we may view printed magazines this way, but for a while longer you can have it both ways.
