Winter — Beat That Bad Boy
With Better Wiper Blades
What's wrong with winter: It doesn't take a hint. It moves along at a glacial pace, wearing out its welcome — and your wiper blades — with salt, mud, ice and snow.

The solution: Stronger, high-tech wiper blades clean off all the crud that winter's kicking in your face.

High-tech wiper blades? Two examples:
  1. Bosch Icon blades don't have the brackets, joints and hinges found on conventional models that freeze up in foul weather. They hold their tension thanks to a piece of sprung steel that applies even pressure across the whole blade. This video explains it. Icon blades have an aerodynamic wind-spoiler design that prevents liftoff, forcing the blades snug against the windshield through their range of motion at highway speeds. The blade's body incorporates soft compounds to reduce friction chatter, and its hard edge scrapes through frozen materials — and still lasts up to 20 percent longer than conventional blade materials.

  2. Silblade, by SSP Companies, is available in four varieties. The Winter model is heavy duty, with a silicone boot. The blade itself is silicone-rubber that leaves an invisible water-repellent coating after each wipe.
How often should you replace wiper blades?
